Ellwood Brockner lived with his parents on 21 Linden Street in Hackensack.

Ellwood Brockner graduated from Fairmount School and Hackensack High School. Fairmount School has old index cards which go all the way back to the turn of the century and Ellwood Brockner's card with his school report card from sixth grade to the ninth grade is on record.

He was born on October 22, 1895 and finished ninth grade at Fairmount School on June 31, 1909. The article states he graduated from Hackensack High School, so the year was most likely 1912.

We do not have a yearbook available for that year. The article reveals a very athletic and engaged young man in the community.

Another Local Boy Killed

Elwood Brockner Pays the Supreme Sacrifice on October 30.
November 22, 1918

Another Hackensack Boy has paid the supreme sacrifice and gone to swell the already long list of those who died that liberty for all nations might prevail.

Mr. and Mrs. W. E. Brockner, of 21 Linden Street, Hackensack, were in receipt of a message yesterday fromWashington, announcing that their son, Elwood William Brockner, had been killed in action in France on October 30th.

Private Brockner was drafted and send to Camp Dix at Wrightstown on April 1st. He was attatched to the 309th Machine Gun Company, and in the first part of May sent overseas.

He was 23 years old and a graduate of the Fairmount School, and the Hackensack High School. He was an enthusiastic athlete and a member of the football and baseball teams. He was also a member of the C. M. S. baseball team. He was a member of the A. I. E. Fraternity and of the Pioneer Lodge.

Previous to going in the army he was employed by Norton, Lilly & Co., steamship agents in New York City.

Elwood was a member of the Methodist Episcopal church, of which his father is a trustee, and was active in the Sunday School until the time of his call. Memorial services will be held on Sunday morning at 10:46 in the church auditorium. This is the first of the boys of this church to give his life in the services of his country.
